An essay is a written composition giving expression to one’s own personal ideas or opinions on some topic. That it also not only expresses or gives information on any subject or details of a narrative or description. Good essay writing has several characteristics. It must have unity in writing, should follow a certain ordered line of thought and must have a style depending upon topic. Beside these characteristics, another important fact about it is that, a good essay should be broken down into various fragments of small paragraphs. However, order and continuity should be maintained by the essay writer as well. By going through the essay, the readers must understand that the next paragraph is the continuation of the previous one.
Significance of Fragmented Paragraphs:
It is better to write an essay into several paragraphs. The reasons behind that are many-
• First, it has an eye soothing effect.
• Secondly, the readers find it easy to go through.
• A single lengthy paragraph makes writing dull and monotonous in nature. If different facts related to the topic on which the essayist is writing, is put into different paragraphs, it will be easy to understand also.
However, while fragmenting a topic into several paragraphs, some points need to be kept in mind. Such as-
• Each paragraph must deal with one topic or an idea; paragraphs must be arranged according to their importance and logical order, to avoid monotony.
• Not only that, the paragraph of a composition should be of different lengths and not always of the same sentence construction.
• Among different paragraphs, the first paragraph should be the introduction of the topic. The middle para or paras should include the basic and important facts related to the topic on which the essayist is writing. And off-course the last para should declare the concluding part.
Thus, writing an essay is not so an easy task. Before starting to write an essay, proper planning is obvious on the part of the essayist. He should decide first how many paragraphs he needs to include in the essay depending on the topic, what contents should each paragraph contains, what should be the length of each para, what should be the entire length of the essay or in other words the number of words, etc.
In conclusion, it may be said that paragraphs of an essay or any composition are not mere arbitrary divisions. There is no hard and strict rule as to the length of paragraphs. They may be long or short according to the necessity of the case. A paragraph may consist of a single sentence or many sentences. Nevertheless, paragraphing is necessary to break the monotony of continuing reading.
